Note from Our Director

Dear Partners,

This month marks Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about the alarming prevalence of dating violence among teens and promote safe, healthy relationships. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), U.S. high school students reported that 1 in 12 experienced physical dating violence and about 1 in 12 experienced sexual dating violence. Teen boys are more likely than girls to perpetrate sexual violence, while teen girls are more likely than boys to perpetrate psychological forms of dating violence. Research suggests that dating violence is common among U.S. teens, but that its prevalence varies by:

• Form of violence—physical, sexual, psychological, or stalking—and whether it is perpetrated in person or using technology

• Whether the teen is the perpetrator, victim, or both

• Demographic characteristics, such as age, sex, and sexual identity (Children’s Safety Network. “Teen Dating Violence Prevention” Factsheet. 2023

Take action by learning the warning signs of dating abuse, empowering young people to establish healthy relationship boundaries, and sharing resources to support teens in need. Together, we can create a culture where dating is safe and respectful for everyone.

As a reminder, CSN’s website contains valuable tips, resources, and updates to help you learn more about teen dating violence prevention. Burns are among the most preventable injuries, yet they remain a leading cause of hospitalizations and long-term recovery. as Access prevention resources, publications, data sources and more in our Fire and Burn Prevention: 2021 Resource Guide.
